When do i unlock the hades cup

After the cup, Phil puts up the trophy in the Lobby. I wad thrilled to see that the Colliseum had more stars and showed a higher difficulty, but when i get there, there is no selection available for the Hades cup.

My understanding is that I need to beat the hades cup before I beat the game so that I can see the secret ending. Furthermore, I've also been led to believe that when I return to Hollow Bastion, it will be to beat the game. So, to sum it up, I'm confused. If I need to beat the hades cuo before beating the game, then my expectation would be that it is available before start trying to finish the game.
